Our History

Sierra’s founder- Ben Sacco- took root in the fertile valley of Central California.  In 1946, Ben opened Sierra Bag Company (an agripackager).   In 1959, Ben dedicated part of his lot in Bakersfield, CA for the collection of scrap ferrous and non-ferrous materials.  It is with his broad vision that Sierra Iron and Metal was born.  Ben needed a solution to the process the scrap materials.  While visiting Italy (his birth place)- Ben found such a solution.  He purchased a baler and had it installed in his yard in Bakersfield, CA.  Many were so impressed by his ability to move scrap- he decided to start manufacturing and selling his own scrap processing equipment.  Throughout the years, Ben proceeded to open several different entities to service the needs of the recycling, oil, industrial, agricultural, and commercial industries.  Ben’s philosophy was to always “tell the customer the truth.”  This same philosophy was passed down to Ben’s sons- Philip and John.  This is the “Sierra Way.”
